Painting
in the digital era
Four contemporary artists exhibit their work for the first
time together in the exceptional site of Place de Séoul in Paris The
exhibition " 4 Place de Séoul " presents several artworks by
four contemporary artists, each of them having a different style but having in
common the desire that it is necessary today to link tradition and innovation,
experimentation and transmission, traditional ways of painting and digital culture
-- in short, to link modernity and post-modernity. For
these artists, painting today means painting in a world ruled by digital networks,
designed by technologies which expand and shape our behaviors and influence our
belief systems and our artistic inspiration. Rather than
staying focused on new tools that add to the ones already used by painters, modern
technology should be conceived as a system and as a culture. These four artists
are exhibiting together as a way of exploring how the digital era works through,
criss-crosses, orients and disorients all contemporary art schemes in their wide
variety. -
Bernard
Demiaux has been involved for a long time with informational objects
such as computer codes and computer languages with which he re-invents not only
nature but also the art of painting.
-
Patrick
Baillet, in his work pursues could be called the origins of the act of
painting in its original purity and in a movement free of any conceptual add-ons.
This is the sense of the works he shows 4 Place de Séoul.
-
The work of Reynald Drouhin is hard to assign to a
too well-defined category even if his art is clearly part of the digital arts,
because he constantly renews his subjects, his objectives and his methods of investigating
esthetism in our postmodern society. At 4 Place de Séoul he revisits a
key topic of the modern age - the monochrome. -
Norbert
Hillaire has a visual artist's approach, which is complementary to his
work as theorist of the use of digital technologies in art and culture, an approach
which represents the pursuit of research and theoritical thinking by other means.
